Different writing styles of Resume writing

It can be difficult to search around in the enormous amount of ideas, opinions and guides that is available today. Here you can find descriptions on the different styles of Resume’s that is recommended. There is not one optimal or correct version – the right style depends upon a lot of different factors and to find out what will work best for you, will be something you discover when you have tried different versions. The final result should hopefully be that you gain full control of your Resume and get the job of your dreams. There are three basic styles you could choose from:

Functional Resume Style

This Resume style is based mostly on your skills; it concentrates on the acquired skills you have gathered in the past, but also how you have used these skills in your previous positions. This style would be the best style to use if you have gaps in your employment history and/or want the recruiter to focus on your expertise/skills rather than discovering your visible gaps in your employment history. Not that you should withhold any important information, but you don’t need to make it obvious for the recruiter to see these negative facts in your Resume. You could say for whatever reason – if your skills / expertise are more important for a recruiter / headhunter than your qualifications or employment history, then a functional Resume is the obvious choice.

Performance Resume Style

The performance Resume style mostly focuses on past performance. This is often the case if you’re a major achiever or very often seen in “sales” or “economic” related positions. With this type of Resume you will focus the attention of the recruiter on your performance/achievement during each chronological job listed in your employment history. For example if you have been on the same step on the ladder for some years and achieved a lot at your work, but now you want to take the next step in your career. You can – by using this type of Performance Resume – , show that you are a high performer and have achieved goals; that you have done this for some years and now you’re ready to take the next step. If the recruiter / headhunter recognize this, he knows you’re committed and will do the little extra “something” to achieve your next goals.

Targeted Resume Style

A targeted type of Resume would focus on the requirement of the vacant position and exclude most other unnecessary information that could distract the recruiter / headhunter from judging you to be the perfect match for the vacant position. Sometimes this could be the case if you’re from a completely different sector or your employment history is too diversified to be a perfect match. The skills and expertise you have acquired during your professional working experience has helped your professional capacity, but it is not directly applicable to the vacant position unless you illustrate why. That’s why in this case the best idea would be to have a Resume targeted for that specific job.

Which Resume type is the best?

Standards, guides or rules are almost not best used as they are, and this is especially the case with regards to your Resume. The best thing that you can do is to take these good ideas and put them together to become what will be called a “Combination Resume”. This style of a Resume is the most used format. You basically use a little of all the above styles when you are trying to make that perfect Resume. It is rare that a clean type would be used, as the job vacancies are fairly complex and your employment history would need to be targeted every time to answer the requirements of the recruiter / headhunter.

Tailor make the Resumes to the job you want – and get it!

Your Resume is probably the most important part of your application to get the job of your dreams. The cover letter will be the place where you convince the recruiter/headhunter/company to read on, and read your entire Resume.

A very good idea will be to Tailor make every job application with a Tailor made Resume, if you want the job of your dreams, the employer should also read a “dream of a Resume”.

The basic principle of your Resumes is to Tailor make it to the job:

  • Be sure to cover the most important job skills, qualifications, and experience in your Resume.
  • Be certain that most parts of your Resume relates to the job you apply for.
  • Use the same skills, experience, and qualifications description as in the job ad.
  • Ensure that your previous experience is clearly and relevant to the job application.

This is a lot easier to do when using Comoto, you can have several Resumes in the system and specialize them to the current application.

You have the basic material available from your basic Resume (maybe your LinkedIn profile), and then you should just adapt that material to the wishes to you dream job.

An Outline of the basics in a Resume is seen below:

Professional Summary

The prof. summary is the part where you describe your overall motivation. Here you should describe that the current job would fit into your career choice. This is should show the employer that this job is the next step on your career ladder.

Skills

Skills are mostly seen as keywords in a job add; they are essential criterias that you have to have to fill this position. It is not a question if you have them all, most people don’t or just barely, but you must include all the required skills as much as possible. Highlight the skills where your expertise really supersedes the demands highlighted and mention the rest.

Work Experience

Your former work experience needs particular care and you should try to reuse some of the skills or goals explained in the job ad. Explain you experience very concise and clear, write the roles and tasks you had. Be sure to use the same wordings as in the requirements for this job.

Use several examples, and where it is possible show how your skills where developed and refined through your previous work experience. Make it extremely clear that you have gained extra expertise through your previous experience.

Achieved goals

Goals that you have achieved on top of your work experience for each job description are extremely positive, it shows that you aim for the goals the employer puts up and that you are dedicated to the relevant tasks. Try to use examples that are related to the new job application if possible.

Educations / Qualifications

A lot of job ads describe a certain set of required qualifications. You should try to provide qualifications that meet these requirements. Sometimes you have similar qualifications, try to convince them that they are good enough. Either do it by email beforehand so that you are sure that your qualifications are good enough. This also gives you the opportunity to have a talk with the employer before you send your Resume.

Your qualifications need to be direct and to the point, and if the employer describes them very details, you do the same. Make it look like you’re obviously qualified and the best choice for the job.

As described above it is not that hard to make your Resume targeted to the job your applying for. Using Comoto to do this is very easily, you have the opportunity to have several distinct Resume’s and you can change them and have as many as you like in your portfolio. You can even make them online versions, so that you can refer to a link if you talk with an interesting person.

Tailored (targeted) Resumes – use a job targeted Resume to increase the likelihood of getting the job

CustomCVsml Tailored (targeted) Resumes use a job targeted Resume to increase the likelihood of getting the jobDo you use the same Resume for every application you make – you shold not !

You want to have specialised or as we call it targeted Resume for each job you apply for and with our multiple Resumes feature you are able to do that fast and easy.

We have implemented a feature called multiple Resumes.
With this feature you can have as many CV’s as you want and notice you can choose to make them inherit or not inherit from each other (we also call this a clone). When inherited – if you change the “top” CV of a group of inherited CV they all change – smart ! (example – at the drawing above – if the you in the Michael Comoto (Renewables) CV change a date  both the German and the Danish version same date is also changed).

If you want to have another CV version that are not inherited/linked to other CV’s then make a non inherit version (we also call this a copy). It could also be a CV in another language – even smarter!

For each CV you can choose Template (and preview before you choose).

Hereby you only need change what is necessary to have tailormade CV’s for the job application you need just right now – and we have saved you a lot of time and efforts !

Notice your CV versions are all saved in your portfolio of CV’s and you can use them as you like.

Resume Inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!

lg share en Resume Inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!

Be aware of Resume inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!

CV Resume Database Resume Inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!Well, is it a lie or is it a mistake when your Resume is not consistent with easy search able information? The judge of that I think will be the recruiter not you!

Have you ever considered checking your Resume data and other information - which can be found within seconds on the Internet - and compare that to your Resume data. It can be titles, responsibilities, task carried out or exams that you state but a search engine source shows differently hereby pinpointing a potential conflict or breach in
data consistence.

At some time during a hiring process either the recruiter or your potential new colleagues might do some checking or preparing before meeting you, and your Resume can be completely correct as the search information might be outdated but when it happens the doubt have been raised and they might as a consequence prefer another candidate.

The best idea would be to do the same tests yourself – and remember not only on Google, also test some of the other search engines as well as industry specific pages and other relevant sources.

Remember to search as if you were a headhunter – it might be that the job and title you claim you have is also shown by somebody else – and make other similar logical tests.

If you find some information you would like to have corrected or deleted which I doubt you can – but it might be worth a try – then the second best thing you can do is to be prepared and have a good and reliable explanation to the inconsistency in the information.

– and spent time on an application – but the dream job was a fake just to attract attention to a Resume or Job database!

CV Resume Database I have just found the perfect job!!In the last couple of weeks I have illustrated some of the dirty tricks and issues with Resumes and the job process and I have with examples illustrated that candidates, companies and also the Resume database providers can have doubtful behaviors !

This week I will continue to illustrate misconduct from Resume database owners – the subject for this week is an example from our home country as a large recruiting company here had guidelines that each of their departments should have at least 25 job offers – and if they did not have enough actual jobs they should simply invent some fake jobs!

Regrettably – this example is not the only example but seldom have the misconduct been as clear a part of the corporate guidelines – it seems to be an often used practice for some headhunters, CV database providers and even companies  to show they are successfull.

To avoid any doubt this is illegal in Denmark and will be prosecuted should anyone get any smart ideas!

How can you avoid being misused by a fake job provider – sorry to say but you can’t – but if you believe it might be the case for an interesting job wait a few days before applying or call the provider to check – and hereby you also might get additional information – as the provider often will not spend time explaining anything to you if the job is a fake.

Remember, if you as a candidate applied for a fake job you will often be told – sorry but you are not relevant for that job – but remember to add your Resume to our database – and apply again as your background is relevant for these types of jobs. Hereby you are not only wasting time but also get the wrong advice, you might also believe you wrongly have had a chance for getting a particular job or that particular type of job is available . Unfortunately if neither of these facts are correct as you might be taking erroneous decisions for your  future career!

I really hope you will not encounter a “fake job” and if you do, that you will discover in time and save the extra work that it brings with no result at all.

Target your Resume to the job you want

Your Resume is probably the most important part of your application to get the job of your dreams. The cover letter will be the place where you convince the recruiter/headhunter/company to read on, and read your entire Resume.

A very good idea will be to target every job application with a tailor-made Resume, if you want the job of your dreams, the employer should also read a “dream of a Resume”.

The basic principle of your Resume is to target it to the job. :

  • Be sure to cover the most important job skills, qualifications, and experience in your Resume.
  • Be certain that most parts of your Resume relates to the job you apply for.
  • Use the same skills, experience, and qualifications description as in the job ad.
  • Ensure that your previous experience is clearly and relevant to the job application.

This is a lot easier to do when using Comoto, you can have several Resume in the system and specialize them to the current application.

You have the basic material available from your basic Resume(maybe your LinkedIn profile), and then you should just adapt that material to the wishes to you dream job. An Outline of the basics in a Resume is seen below:

Professional Summary

The prof. summary is the part where you describe your overall motivation. Here you should describe that the current job would fit into your career choice. This is should show the employer that this job is the next step on your career ladder.

Skills

Skills are mostly seen as keywords in a job add; they are essential criteria’s that you have to have to fill this position.

Using Comoto to do this is very easily, you have the opportunity to have several distinct Resumes and you can change them and have as many as you like in your portfolio. You can even make them online versions, so that you can refer to a link if you talk with an interesting person.

3 different types of career changes

Why would you have to change your current job?

There are 3 main reasons normally used for changing you career.

  1. Involuntary career change
  2. Normal career change
  3. Major career change

Involuntary career change

As it says – “Involuntary” – it is out of your hands, you might be the one making the decision to make the career change, but it is what you could call a “force majeure” or a “greater force” decision. Below you can see examples of this:

  • Your new job was not as agreed in the contract
  • Redundancy caused by merger, acquisition, takeover
  • Redundancy caused by outsourcing to more competitive countries/companies
  • Redundancy caused by loss of market share or position
  • Conflict with new management after a merger or takeover; there is simply not enough chemistry between the new parties who needs to work together

“Involuntary” career change demands the best of you and your network. Sometimes it is frustrating and you would say “Why me!”. But the only thing that works in that situation is to start to plan the changes ahead in a rationally way. Before the situation becomes unbearable for you start planning your next moves and try to focus on the future instead of the past. Use you past positively and make your Resume the best Resume around. Activate you network and have all your listening antennas up and ready to tune in to possible opportunities. If you manage to get through this hard period of your life, you will get some valuable experience of ”change management” that would be an asset to a new employer and you can certainly talk about having coped effectively with crisis!

Normal career change

The most common career change scenario you probably already have experienced is that you believe and wants to have a better job with more rewards within your line of work. You are unsatisfied with your current employer who has for instance in salary and bonus issues dragged his feet and maybe a new company offers you more for your line of expertise. The first thing you should do is to take control of your Resume and make it updated and exactly right for your next job. Then start networking, scanning for possible jobs, begin approaching agencies and headhunters. What you need is an up-to-date Resume and a perfect cover-letter that explains what you are trying to achieve, and why you think you are ready to do a career move. These should be prepared before you make actually contact with any new employer or headhunter. This also needs to be done for you to be sure why and what you want and not just take the first available position you find. Have a look in our other Comoto Resume Tips to get some ideas on how to write the perfect Resume and remember to target your Resume to the actual job at hand.

Major career change

If you want make a complete change in your occupation – after having for instance finished a new education, returning after motherhood, returning from a period abroad, served in the military or you are just feed up with the sector you work in and want to make a major shift into something that you will find more interest in, this will demand all your senses and competences to do so, and especially in the case you need to do this in a rational and controlled manner. You will also need to do this as if it was an exercise or project. It is not something that cannot be done overnight or just by making a new Resume and then go job hunting as you go away from safe haven and enter unchartered waters therefore proper planning is a must. You might have to do this over time and get your network working for you, but be aware not to disclose anything for people who might become a whistleblower and go behind your back. Because then a simple wish to try something new can lead to an “involuntary” career change.

Good luck in your career change

We have been asked several times about the difference between LinkedIn and Comoto. Comoto is a Resume builder and your personal Resume database and LinkedIn is a relationship database so from our perspective the difference is clear – in particular if you wants to separate between building a network and getting a job.

Differences:

  • The relationship network (LinkedIn) is based on people and people interconnections. Your Resume illustrates your personal background and achievements.

Similarities:

Ambitious Resume, Party Animal on Facebook!

CV Resume Database Ambitious Resume, Party Animal on Facebook! My ambitious Resume depicts me as an ambitious leader and I always know how to behave correctly but on Facebook I am a Party Animal! Beware, the inconsistent information or signals can be an issue!

In the world of fast data exchange and social network your history and presence might not be neither consistent nor showing the person you might be trying to show in your Resume.

I am not saying you should avoid to use social networks and the like – just be aware that the information about you might not be consistent or underestood by a recruiter as you had expected, hereby raising an issue that moves you away from the top spot and the dream job!

Therefore be consistent and use Social media wisely!

It can be difficult to remove information after they have been published – deleting, changing might be possible else pausing or deleting a profile might be necessary if it is possible or even an option. The last option is to drown the unwanted information – lots of new pictures and text depicting you as a different person, as the Recruiter seldom reads all availbale information about you.
